Victor Cuevas

It is with a joyous heart that we remember the life of Victor Cuevas, a man who was as reliable as a well-tuned engine and as spirited as a salsa dance. Victor was born on February 24, 1977, in Chicago, Illinois and passed away suddenly on March 26, 2024.  Known by many as Vic, he was a charismatic man who lived his life with a radiant enthusiasm that was infectious to all who had the pleasure of knowing him.

Vic was raised in Ukrainian Village and after graduating from Ellen Mitchell Grammar School and Holy Trinity High School, he attended Wright College and Columbia College.  After high school, Vic worked at Lakeshore Athletic Club for almost 10 years and then dabbled in the club industry.  While he grew up immersed in the automotive world, he eventually made his way working fulltime side by side with his father at Victor’s Auto Repair Shop.   His loyalty and reliability were well known in his community, and he was always ready to lend a hand to those in need of car repairs.

Victor was a man of many talents and passions. He was a first-degree black belt in Tae Kwon Do and a silver medalist in the Junior Olympics. Having grown up on the soccer field with his dad, he later became a sponsor and manager of La Banda Soccer Club. An avid sports fanatic, Victor supported all Chicago teams, especially The Bears. His love for sports, including a fondness for NASCAR, was only rivaled by his love for a good party.  His knack for throwing unforgettable parties was legendary.  He was always engaged in great fun with his daughters including games, music and piñatas with many good friends and family to celebrate their birthdays and other special events.  Vic also enjoyed going to a good house party and loved all kinds of music, especially old school house and hip hop music.  He rarely missed a Chicago summer festival, but his absolute favorite was West Fest.  Vic was an amazing dancer and a true salsero at heart.  He also had a penchant for blowing off fireworks and was an eclectic movie buff with sci-fi, anime, martial arts and Bollywood genres among his favorites.

Victor was larger than life and a great storyteller.  He was always ready with a quick quip and could often be found engaging in mischievous endeavors.  He was also a true foodie.  Not only was he a pizza afficionado, but he was known for his love of all of Chicago’s food culture, including Odge’s Italian Beef and eating in China Town.

While he travelled regularly to Mexico City to see family, Victor also found great joy in exploring new landscapes.  From hiking in Na Pali Coast in Kauai, Hawaii and swimming the Trinity Hot Springs of Idaho to seeing the Great Wall of China each journey brough a fresh perspective and a renewed zest for life.  After starting a family, yearly trips to Six Flags as well as vacations with his wife and daughters to the Wisconsin Dells, Bellingham, Washington and more recently, the introduction of camping, were all joyous highlights of Victor’s life.  He also carried wonderful familial memories of holidays spent at Montrose Harbor.

Victor’s reliable, hardworking nature and his love for family and respect for duty was evident in every facet of his life.  His spirited personality truly made Victor unique. His life was a tapestry woven with vibrant threads of love, humor, and passion and his love for life was only surpassed by his love for family.  His memory will continue to inspire and uplift all those who had the honor of knowing him.  His life was an embodiment of the words of Ralph Waldo Emerson: "It is not length of life, but depth of life."  Vic leaves a legacy of loyalty, reliability, and charisma.  Let us remember him not for his departure, but for the joy and vibrancy he brought to our lives.

Victor was the beloved husband of Charlee Rojek; the cherished father of Anamarie, Victoria and Carolina; a loyal and devoted son of Victor M. and Josefina Cuevas; a loving brother of Cesar (the late Angelica) and Gerardo (Holly) Cuevas; the proud uncle of Cesarin, Victor Gerardo, Mateo, Luca, Emilio, Uxue and the late Michael; the dearest nephew of many including his closest local family, Heriberto Cuevas and the late Pilar Zamora and the Cuevas Diaz and the Guerrero Camacho Families in Mexico City, Mexico; caring cousin of many including  his close local family, Erica and Angelica Cuevas, Enrique Zamora, Nellie Chavez, Augustine, Fernando and Nancy Zamora and Jane Goyco.  He was also the kind son in law of Jeri Freeman (Fred Mueller); fond brother-in-law of Allison (Bob) Burdick, Deborah (Dennis) Virta, Pamela (Bob) Jurgens, Christopher Rojek and Amy (Alberto) Santiago Silva; and he was a caring and true friend of many including his best friends from a young age, Esteban and Maria Santiago, Sandra Santiago (Carlos) Hernandez, Angie Santiago (Orlando) Torres, Esteban Jr. (Melissa) and Marilyn Santiago, Enrique Zavala and Family, Richie Hernandez and Family and Soline Velasquez and Family.

Visitation will be held Tuesday, April 2nd 4:00 – 8:00 PM at The Original Rago Brothers Funeral Home, 624 N. Western Ave., Chicago.  Family and friends will meet at Holy Rosary Catholic Church, 612 N. Western Ave.., Chicago on Wednesday, April 3rd for visitation from 10:00 a.m. until time of Funeral Mass at 11:00 a.m.  Interment private.
