William Clinton Counihan

William Clinton Counihan, a cherished son of Chicago, born on August 9, 1934, gracefully departed this world on December 16, 2025, at his home in Garden Grove, California, where he had resided since 1972. He lived a rich and vibrant life, filled with unforgettable memories and a legacy that will endure in the hearts of those who had the privilege of knowing him.

Bill, as he was affectionately known, was not just a man of profession but of passion. He took great pride in his work, owning a distinguished business specializing in transmission repair, where his skills contributed to the community and secured his reputation as a respected figure among his peers. His keen intellect and unwavering dedication were apparent not only in his career but also in every facet of his life.

A proud veteran of the United States Navy, Bill enlisted on November 18, 1955, serving with distinction until his honorable discharge on August 19, 1957. Attaining the rank of Engineman, Petty Officer Third Class, he exemplified the values of courage, commitment, and service to his country.

Bill’s essence was best captured through the joyous laughter he spread among friends and family. Renowned for his boyish and mischievous smiles, he was a master of humor, endearing himself to all with his delightful pranks and lighthearted spirit. His remarkable ability to lift spirits and cultivate joy was matched only by his profound love for cats, who were fortunate to bask in his affection.

He cherished the simple pleasures of life, often found indulging in the serene experiences of boating and reveling in the soothing embrace of the ocean. These passions reflected his zest for life and the joy he derived from nature’s beauty.

Throughout his years, Bill developed a keen interest in photography, and he loved to preserve memories of his family. He had a treasure trove of old pictures that brought laughter and nostalgia to those who viewed them. Every Christmas, he would create his own holiday cards, using cherished family photographs to send love and warm wishes to his family members.

Deeply rooted in his community, Bill was always present for loved ones in times of need, demonstrating an unwavering loyalty to family and friends alike. He has left behind an indelible mark—a genuine authenticity that shaped the lives he touched.

Bill is survived by two nieces, Pamela Eskew and Debbie (Matthew) Williams; three nephews, Ryan, Kevin, and Michael Counihan; his cousins, Joanne Boettin, Ron (Miraye) and Ruth Palm. He was preceded in death by his beloved parents, Clinton Counihan and Lydia Counihan, nee Boettin; his brothers, Bob (Donna) and Clint Counihan; several step-siblings; and a cousin, Edgar Palm.

A Memorial Service in Bill's hometown of Garden Grove, California, will be held at 2:00 PM CST on Sunday, December 28th, in the backyard of his residence.

There will also be a Memorial Mass, which will be announced at a later date and will be held at St. Rose Catholic Church, 603 S. Main St., Wilmington, Illinois. A Committal Service and Military Honors will immediately follow the Mass at Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery in Elwood, Illinois.
