Walter Edward Draxler, died on October 12, 2026, in Buffalo Grove, Illinois, at the age of 97. He was born on September 11, 1929, in Cleveland, Ohio, and lived a long, creative, and deeply engaged life marked by ingenuity, devotion to family, and a generous spirit that left a lasting impression on all who knew him.
Walter earned a bachelor’s degree in Aeronautical Engineering from Ohio State University, a foundation well suited to the remarkable curiosity and skill that would define so much of his life. He also served in the U.S. Air Force, carrying forward a lifelong connection to aviation and craftsmanship.
A gifted maker and tireless hands-on creator, Walter was rarely far from a project. He was often found carving a totem pole, building and restoring cuckoo clocks, or crafting a violin from scratch. His interests were wide-ranging and vivid: stained glass, remote-control airplanes, and the creation of Oxbow Products, where he made horse collars and key rings. Among his proudest accomplishments was building a four-seat airplane from the ground up, constructed in his two-car garage in Arlington Heights. He also took great satisfaction in crafting violins by hand, works that reflected both patience and artistry.
In his neighborhood, Walter became affectionately known as “The Bike Guy,” a name earned through the many bicycles he repaired and sold to neighborhood children. Neighbors delighted in stopping by to talk with him about his latest hobby or project, and those passing his home were sometimes treated to the cheerful sound of his whistling and singing. He had a warmth that invited conversation and a lively enthusiasm that made ordinary encounters memorable.
Walter was a member of First United Methodist Church of Arlington Heights, a community that formed an important part of his life. He also had a great love for animals, especially the many dogs he adopted over the years, as well as his tropical fish collection. His home and life were filled with movement, color, invention, and care.
Nothing brought him greater pride than his large family. Favorite family memories included summer vacations in St. Germain, Wisconsin, and journeys across the United States in the family’s STARCRAFT motorhome, traveling together as one large, crowded family. Those trips became part of the family’s shared story and remain enduring expressions of Walter’s love for togetherness, adventure, and the joy of simply being with the people he cherished most.
Walter is survived by his loving children, Jane (Marc) Mundt, Jerry (Sandy) Draxler, Diane (Ron) Stoffregen, Glenn Draxler and Linda Draxler; his cherished grandchildren, Rebecca (Joe) Alessi, Catherin (Anthony) Mussairo, Shannon (Leo) Belill, Alex (Bailey) Stoffregen, Julia Stoffregen, Nichole Draxler, and Lisa and Michelle Draxler; and his treasured great grandchildren, Anthony, Jaxon and Raelynn Mussairo, Raelynn Mussairo, Leo Belill V, Leo and Niko Salvaggio, and Flanigan James Shamus. In all of them, his legacy of creativity, perseverance, and love of family continues.
He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Marjorie Julia Draxler, née Porter; his father, Konrad Draxler; his mother, Theresia Draxler, née Muhri; and his siblings, John (the late Alda), Konrad (the late Hellen), and Harry (the late Mary) Draxler.
