Merrilee Jean Martin, beloved matriarch and dedicated professional, passed away on February 23, 2026, in Gurnee, Illinois. Born on April 27, 1944, in Detroit, Michigan, Merrilee lived a life rich with purpose, achievement, and service to others.

Driven by a desire for justice and community safety, Merrilee joined the law enforcement sector, where she started as a police officer in Menlo Park, California. She later brought her talents to the Chicago Police Department, where she dedicated 18 years of her career. She excelled as an OPS investigator before ultimately advancing to the rank of Sergeant, a position she held for her final ten years, and worked within the 11th and 13th Districts.

Merrilee embodied the spirit of hard work and commitment throughout her career.  In addition to her police work, Merrilee worked in hospitality at Second City as a waitress, and as a social worker at the Chicago-Read Mental Health Center. Her passion for community well-being was evident in every role she undertook. A natural leader, she served as captain of Sterch's Softball team while also owning the bar that sponsored the team, where her enthusiasm and dedication brought people together in friendship and sport.

Educationally, Merrilee was no stranger to striving for excellence. She graduated from Salinas High School in Salines, CA and furthered her education, earning a Bachelor's Degree at Northwestern University, followed by a Master's Degree from National Lewis University. She culminated her academic pursuits with a Juris Doctorate degree from John Marshall Law School, paving the way for her eventual private legal practice, where she focused on Elder Law.

Merrilee is survived by her loving family, including her sons, Wolfe (Julia) Stern and Jason Stern; her grandchild, Robin Ozzie Stern; her niece, Jennifer (Tony) Reynolds, and her nephew Ryan Martin. She is preceded in death by her father, John William Martin; her mother, Mary Ann Martin, nee Ryan; and her brother, Jack Martin.

Merrilee Jean Martin’s legacy is one of commitment to family, community, and the pursuit of justice. She will be remembered for her impactful contributions, her unwavering support for loved ones, and her dedication to making the world a better place for those around her.
