Marcus Jungmin Roh, a radiant spirit and a bright light in the lives of many, passed away on December 23, 2025, at the age of 16 in his lifelong home of Chicago, Illinois. Born on August 17, 2009, Marcus lived a life rich with melody, adventure, and a profound capacity for love.
A Legacy of Music and Learning
A sophomore at the University of Chicago Laboratory School, Marcus was a cherished member of the school community where he had been a student since the age of three. It was within this community that he cultivated his lifelong friendships and his deep passion for the arts.
His musical journey began at the age of five under the guidance of his adored teacher, Ms. Christie Abe. A devoted violinist and singer, Marcus’s dedication and artistry earned him a prestigious place in the Chicago Youth Symphony Orchestras (CYSO). His commitment to his craft was a testament to his disciplined yet creative soul. In addition to his strings, Marcus possessed a beautiful voice and was a proud member of the Bel Canto choir, where he shared his love of song and harmony with his peers. He held a deep affection for his teachers, Ms. Sinclair and Ms. Huang, whose guidance helped shape his academic and personal growth.
A Citizen of the World
Marcus possessed a curiosity that knew no borders. He traveled the world extensively, many times over, yet he held a particularly deep love for Hawaii. Having visited the islands almost every year since his birth, Hawaii served as a second home where he found peace and joy throughout his sixteen years.
Compassion for All Creatures
Beyond his intellectual and musical pursuits, Marcus was defined by his extraordinary compassion. He had a profound love for animals, particularly his beloved dogs—Daisy, Dalai, and Rosie. He delighted in their companionship, embodying a gentle kindness toward all living creatures.
Family and Remembrance
Marcus is lovingly remembered by his family and the many friends who became family over the years. He is survived by his devoted father, Lucas Joon Roh; his beloved mother, Beebe Ujin Roh (nee Song); and his loving brother, Alexandre YoungMin Roh.
He also leaves behind his cherished grandparents, Paul and Agatha Roh and Joung Won Song; his supportive aunts and uncles, John Roh, Andrew (Amanda) Roh, Michael (Holly) Song, and Ann (Martin) Madden; and his dear cousins, Abbey and Kiran Roh, Michael Jr., Nickolas and Anna Song, and Eleanor, Evelyn, Theodore, and Charles Madden.

While his time here was far too brief, the impact of his life and the beauty of his passions will forever echo in the hearts of those who love him.
