Joyce Arlene Deuter (née Krause), a dedicated professional and beloved matriarch, passed away on April 22, 2026, in Arlington Heights, Illinois. Born on December 29, 1935, in Chicago, Illinois, Joyce led a life marked by unwavering commitment to family, career, and community.

A graduate of Schurz High School in Chicago, Joyce embarked on a career that encompassed various secretarial positions, most notably at PricewaterhouseCoopers (PWC), from which she retired. Her professionalism and work ethic were evident throughout her career, reflecting a strong dedication that she carried into all aspects of her life.

Joyce was a truly wonderful woman, cherished for her warmth, grace, and steadfast devotion to her loved ones. She was the loving mother of Lynn (Frank) Gaziano, Michael (Debbie) Deuter, Cheryl Deuter (Dennis Zahler), and Joanne (Mary Pernacciaro) Deuter. She found immense joy and pride as a cherished grandmother to Ron (Jo Anna) Deuter, Nick Deuter, Katie (Steve) Moore, Stephanie (Todd) Fallbacher, Pattie (Brett) Kaczorowski, and Kim (Luis) Santamaria. Her familial legacy extended to her adored great-grandchildren, including Sam, Jack, Ellie, Jacob, Cole, Haylie, Allison, Alexis, Jack F., Hannah, Brooklyn, Cade, Blake, Madison, Luke, Elizabeth, Reid, Lucie, Ruthie, Gwen, Sofie, and Remie, as well as her dearest great-great-grandchildren Valentina, Lazaro, and Jovanni. She is also survived by her devoted confidant and sometimes partner in crime, younger sister Judy (Mick) McKillip; and many fond nieces and nephews. Joyce was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 69 years, Paul William Deuter.

Throughout her life, Joyce took great pride in her role as a wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. She was known for her countless hours managing her household with dedication—cooking, organizing, and accommodating the schedules and needs of a busy family of six. A committed participant in education and civic responsibilities, she actively engaged with the Parent-Teacher Association at both local and national levels and served as an election judge for many years, exemplifying her sense of community involvement and public service.

Joyce’s personal interests and hobbies reflected a bright and curious spirit. An avid traveler, she enjoyed numerous cruises alongside her husband, exploring destinations such as Europe, the Panama Canal, Iceland, Greenland, Tahiti, and Hawaii, as well as many journeys across the United States. She was an enthusiastic reader and lover of puzzles, excelling in crossword puzzles, jigsaw puzzles, and consistently outplaying others at Scrabble. Sewing and knitting were among her leisure pursuits, demonstrating her creativity and patience.

A passionate collector and admirer of penguins, Joyce surrounded herself with penguin-themed clothing and novelties, reflecting her distinctive and endearing personality. Her affection for animals extended to her love of dogs—she owned several throughout her life—and even during the challenges posed by Alzheimer’s disease, the sight of a picture of a dog or a visit from a therapy dog would bring a profound and heartfelt smile to her face.

Joyce Arlene Deuter’s life was a testament to kindness, resilience, and dedication. She leaves behind a rich heritage of love, strength, and cherished memories that will continue to inspire her family and all who knew her. Her legacy endures in the hearts of her family members and many friends who had the privilege of knowing such a remarkable woman.
